Hovey’s Outdoor Adventures’ Christmas Show, Dec. 17, 2012

A reading of Hovey's original Christmas play, "A visit from Auntie Thresa Claus," remembering a  Christmas meal of C-rations at 20 degrees below zero at Copper Center, Alaska, recent activities with blunderbuss and pistols and a recipe of Southern cornbread dressing are components of this special Christmas edition of "Hovey's Outdoor Adventures."

Of particular interest to gun-oriented POMA members, the Traditions' blunderbuss has now taken squirrels and been on several, so far unsuccessful, big game hunts on Georgia's Ossabaw and Cumberland islands. Blunders with blunderbuss included its loosing its ball and blasting away at an Ossabaw deer with only a wad and missing a hog on Cumberland island when the barrel-retaining screw fell from the gun. Now using an over-ball wad and several wraps of electrical tape to retain the barrel, the Blunderbuss Chronicles continue as I attempt to take a piece of big game with the gun. This gun will shoot 2-inch groups with its .54-caliber ball at 25 yards. It will do its job if it hangs together and I do my part.

After the blunderbuss failure on Ossabaw, I spine shot a doe with the CVA Optima .50-caliber muzzleloading single-shot pistol. It struggled to its feet and as was moving away.  I fired five shots at 50-60 yards at the moving deer with a 5 1/2-inch Pietta .44 replica of the Remington 1858 Sheriff's Model revolver that is imported by Traditions.. Three of the five shots struck, with the fatal shot going through both lungs with the ball being recovered from under the off-side skin. The 30-gr. black-powder charge and round ball downed the 53-pound (dressed weight) deer, but this is a comparatively weak load that I would not recommend on larger animals, except in a back-up role or to finish the animal at point-blank range.  I have, to date, taken one deer and three hogs (largest 130 lbs. live weight) with 6 shots with a more powerful load of TripleSeven Powder and round ball using a 12-inch barreled stainless steel Pietta Remington 1858 revolver with adjustable sights that is imported by Cabela's and called the Buffalo Revolver.

Ads on the show included one from Velcro Wall, the leader in child suspension systems "You stick them up and they stay stuck." Besides their Child Harness Division which allows children to get exercise by doing useful work, like pulling sleds full of firewood and plowing; the Dungeon Division announced its special "Rent a Dungeon" for the holiday season. This sound- proof portable room features stick up Velcro Walls, shackles and hammocks so that children can be confined in a quiet place playing Dungeon while the adults are getting ready for Christmas. Every two hours a very loud bell rings to remind everyone that it is time to release their children. Hanging or confinment for more than two hours is not allowed by an automatic safety lock-unlock system to prevent overuse of the unit.
