Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program selected the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation Inc. (WWIA) as the recipient of 30 flights in support of its 2016 operations. WWIA takes combat-wounded Purple Heart recipients on world-class hunting and fishing trips as a means of honoring their service and assisting with their recovery efforts.
WWIA recently booked its last flight of 2016, courtesy of Hero Miles, which included trips to Tennessee, Alaska, Wisconsin, Montana, and other premier outdoor sporting destinations. These flights were made possible through frequent flyer mile donations made by individual airline passengers.
John McDaniel, WWIA’s Founder and CEO says, “We are grateful to the Hero Miles program for helping us continue our mission of healing combat-wounded veterans through the power of the great outdoors. Thanks to these true Patriots and the generous donors who gave their frequent flyer miles, we were able to provide transportation to many of our world-class events.”
Wounded Warriors frequently return home different than when they left to serve our Nation—life in general and their personal and professional lives have changed dramatically. WWIA strives to show these Heroes that they can still experience and accomplish milestones in their lives, no matter their current circumstances.
WWIA Logistics Coordinator Corrina Bea Hart said, “The Hero Miles grant for 2016 has been a game changer for our programs—we were able to fly Heroes to faraway destinations like Alaska at no cost to them or the Foundation.”
Critical to the healing process, whether from traumatic brain injury, permanent limb disability or post- traumatic stress disorder, WWIA events bolster self-confidence while strengthening the bond with nature, local communities and other Purple Heart veterans. Each WWIA event serves 3-5 Heroes and lasts at least 2-3 full days, allowing for optimal bonding, brotherhood and camaraderie.
