Ducks Unlimited congratulates Sally Jewell, CEO of leading outdoor retailer Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), on her confirmation as the new secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. DU looks forward to building on its relationship with the Department of Interior under Jewell’s leadership, furthering the organization’s conservation mission and addressing issues affecting sportsmen across America.
“Ms. Jewell is a strong leader, and we trust that she will be a vocal proponent for conservation, standing ready to partner with sportsmen and women to ensure our outdoor heritage lives on,” said DU CEO Dale Hall. “Ducks Unlimited is committed to working in partnership with the Interior Department to conserve America’s wetlands and waterfowl and to safeguard our hunting heritage. We look forward to a strong future with the new secretary.”
Jewell replaces former Secretary Ken Salazar. Ducks Unlimited has enjoyed a good working relationship with Secretary Salazar over the past four years, working together on important conservation policies and programs affecting the waterfowl breeding grounds of the Prairie Pothole Region and the vital wintering habitats of the Gulf Coast, in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.
“With Secretary Jewell at the helm, Ducks Unlimited hopes to see continued strong support for public lands such as national wildlife refuges and national parks, some of the most significant resources for waterfowl and waterfowl hunters,” Hall said. “DU will work closely with the secretary to ensure a healthy future for these critical habitats on behalf of our more than 1 million supporters, the vast majority of whom are avid outdoorsmen and women who enjoy these public spaces each year.”
